The 1893 Chicago World's Fair wanted an attraction that could compete with the magnificent Eiffel Tower from the 1889 World's Fair. A young American engineer named George Ferris came up with the dazzling idea of a huge revolving wheel. No one else was sure that this could be built, or if it would be safe for people to ride on the wheel. George Ferris risked everything to build his wheel, and the completed structure that rose 265 feet above the ground was a resounding success. Soon, copies of the Ferris Wheel were being built around the world.
