It is against the rules for a marine to have a pet. Brian visits the fort several times and Nubs is always there waiting for him. One day, Nubs decides he won't be left behind. He follows the team 70 miles through the cold winter desert just to be with his best friend. Brian matches Nubs' determination and starts the process of sending Nubs to America and a new life.
