Mamie Johnson loved baseball. She grew up playing in her grandma's front yard with her uncle, only a few years older than Mamie, and the other boys in the neighborhood. She could play and nobody cared that she was a girl or that her skin was dark. All that changed after her grandma died and she moved to Long Branch, New Jersey to live with her Aunt and Uncle. There, she found if she wanted to play, she had to play softball with the girls. But Mamie doesn't give up. She proves herself and wins a place in the all-male, all-white Police Athletic League. Mamie was 15 years old when Jackie Robinson became the first black ball player to play in the major leagues. Because of his accomplishment, Mamie found the strength to follow her dream. She continues to fight for her dream until she becomes one of only three women who ever play professional ball in the Negro Leagues.

Jenny and Joanna wake up ready for a normal school day. But as they rub their eyes, they hear Grandma's voice at the door. Grandma says, 'Sometimes, some things are more important than school.' When Mom and Dad hear the plan, they agree, but Grandma won't tell the girls what the big surprise is. Their journey takes them out to breakfast, on the subway, and eventually to a baseball stadium to see a real game and to sing America's favorite song, 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame.' This book is full of beautiful illustrations that show just what we love most about baseball, from the peanuts, to the players, to the seventh inning stretch, to the last out. Jenny and Joanna discover that just this once, baseball (and of course, spending time with Grandma) is much more important than school. This book is perfect for anyone who loves the game of baseball or who wants to learn 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame'.
