When a white rabbit runs by, pulling his watch out of his waistcoat, Alice follows him down a rabbit hole and into a world filled with amazing characters. Magic potions make Alice grow, and then shrink, and grow again. A tea party with the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and a sleeping Dormouse leave Alice with more questions than answers. A grouchy queen makes playing croquet 'complete with flamingos for mallets and hedgehogs for balls' a scary proposition. This adventure is filled with amusing characters and whimsical word play. Quite an adventure indeed!

Asterix the Gaul

Rene Goscinny (1961), 48 pages
Illustrated by Albert Uderzo
Audience: 2nd Grade - 8th Grade
Category: Classic, Graphic Novel, Humor
Add Your Comments | Add to MyBookList | Email Review
This entertaining graphic novel is set in 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely- one small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. Gaul is what France was during the Roman Empire and this book describes the adventures of Asterix and Obelix, two Gauls who are best friends and have superhuman strength. Asterix gets his from a secret potion concocted by the village druid and Obelix is permanently super-strong because he fell in a vat of the potion as a child. They and the other villagers take on the Roman soldiers and generals (like Julius Caesar) in hilarious ways. This first of the world-famous Asterix graphic novels series appeals to both children and adults. It has been translated into dozens of languages and inspired an amusement park near Paris called Parc Asterix.
